Over-the-board chess across Berlin
Berlin plays its chess in clubs. They meet on weekday evenings in senior centres, school buildings, sports halls and a chess café on Schönhauser Allee, from Spandau and Reinickendorf to Köpenick and Hellersdorf. The federation's team league ties them together, and the calendar adds summer opens, monthly blitz and rapid series, youth championships, and clubs in Oranienburg and Potsdam just beyond the city line.

Chess960 on Berlin boards
Chess960 has a foothold at Berlin boards. SC Kreuzberg runs a monthly Schach960 tournament: the tournament server carries its August and September 2026 editions, and the federation calendar lists more for November and December 2026. SV Schachfreunde Friedrichshagen opened its 2026 season with a first Schach-960 tournament on 10 January. Berlin Freestylerz, a club founded in July 2025 around the variant, lists tenders for a Chess 960 Grand Prix at Chemie Weißensee and a Chess 960 Rapid at SC Kreuzberg; its page does not say who organises them.
In Chess960, also called Fischer random, the pieces behind the pawns start from one of 960 shuffled set-ups, so prepared openings stop mattering from the first move. Between club evenings it can be played online at ch960.com.
The Chess960 events found in Berlin, as their pages list them:

- Chess 960 Rapid at SC Kreuzberg — tender dated 23 July 2025
- First Schach-960 tournament of the year at SV Schachfreunde Friedrichshagen — 10 January 2026
How this list is kept
Chess in Berlin holds 86 entries, 86 of them active or waiting for a newer trace. The clubs come mostly from the register of the Berliner Schachverband, the tournaments from the chess-results server and the clubs' own news pages; every page behind them was read on .
Each list runs from the newest dated trace down, and that is the only order: nothing is ranked, paid for or moved up by hand. A question that no page answers stays open and reads “not stated by sources”. What the source marks mean, how the two status lines are read and where the list stops is set out under sources and method.
Has a club evening moved?
Berlin clubs move between senior centres, school halls and sports grounds, and the calendar picks up new series every season. If an entry has fallen behind, or a club, tournament or youth group is missing, send a short note with a link to a page that shows it.
